Our journey to net zero
Our journey to net zero
Our sustainability manager (Kenny) has communicated from day one that to prevent the centre from closing and to future-proof it for generations to come, we must undertake a rapid journey to net zero. We are focused on building climate change resilience into our plans to create an inclusive and safe haven for this area during times of extreme weather and uncertainty.
Recently, the journey to net zero has received some negative attention from certain financial establishments claiming it is too expensive. This notion is nonsense; by embracing sustainability, we can achieve financial security. That is why we at the hub are committed to the journey to net zero and have ambitious plans to reach this goal within our first three years of operation.
During our first year of operation, starting October 1, 2024, we have already significantly reduced the carbon footprint of the previously costly and wasteful Green Park Community Centre. We accomplished this through better management of our heat and power systems, as well as reducing our waste, which has not only minimized our carbon footprint but also saved us a considerable amount of money.
As a not-for-profit charity, we managed to turn a profit in our first year. We will use this profit to invest in future-proofing initiatives, retrofitting, water-saving projects, and goals for biodiversity protection. We have a lot of work ahead, but the hub and our land's future look promising.
The 2025 Council Climate Action Scorecards are here Climate Emergency UK have released this year's Council Climate Action Scorecards. These scorecards help mark the progress of UK councils on their actions towards net zero. All UK councils have been assessed in areas such as buildings and heating, biodiversity, transport, planning and land use. We are part of the Scotland Community & Climate Chat (originally called “SCCAN Scotland”) which is an informal social space where you can connect with fellow climate folks, ask questions, to seek support or even to have a wee rant. Who are also part of the international transition movement
We hope you find this information useful in connecting with us and others and learning about what is happening within the climate movement in Scotland
The hub has some funds left to spend on climate education that we received from FEL, as our sustainability manager is one of their recognised climate leadership educators, he is also accepted onto Ig consultants leadership lab starting 9th September 25,
